As a learner
driver you will need to pass the Hazard Perception
Test as part of the Theory Test before
you can apply for your practical driving Test.
What
you need to know about the Hazard Perception: The hazard perception
test will follow about three minutes after your
multiple choice questions and is also shown on a
computer screen. You will be shown a tutorial / demo video
first. This uses sample footage of the hazard
perception test with a sound track (headphones
supplied), which will explain how to complete this
part of the theory test.
You will be
required to watch and respond to 14 video clips of
typical day to day driving scenes lasting around a
minute.
In each
video clip there will be at least one developing
hazard (one of the clips will feature two developing
hazards)
During the
hazard perception test you will
need to respond to a 'developing hazard' by clicking
the mouse button but to achieve a high score try
and respond to
the developing hazard in the early part of its
development.
Top tip:
Be prepared to click the mouse button whenever you
see a potential hazard involving another road
user. In other words anything that might cause you
to change your speed or direction. Continue to
observe the hazard you have identified and should
it continue to develop continue to click!. This will ensure that you click within the
scoring window.
The maximum you can score for each developing hazard
is five points. If you respond by clicking at the beginning of the hazards development you
will score more highly than if you let the hazard
develop too much.
If you continuously click during the video clip you
will score zero for that clip. So concentrate on
detecting the potential hazard then start clicking
at its earliest development.
The Hazard Perception Test pass
mark is 44 out of a possible 75. You will receive your
theory test result when you have finished both
parts of the test and have returned to the waiting
room.

What Hazard

There are plenty
of hazard perception test demo CD's, DVD's or online tests to
sample. Take a good look at the various software products
before purchasing as some do not feature official DSA
practice or demo clips. The
DSA have produced a DVD and a video/booklet package
called The Official Guide to Hazard Perception,
formally known as RoadSense, which is the official
guide to the hazard perception test for all drivers
and riders. Well worth a look below...
